Missing father
![]() | |
A man spotted his father alive on television - five years after he thought he had cremated him. A body discovered three years after his disappearance in 2000 was thought to be the pensioner, but it's now emerged it wasn't. From Manchester Danny Savage reports:
When John Delaney disappeared he was spending much of his time living rough. He was last seen in a hostel in Manchester. His family searched the streets of the city for him but had no luck. So when a badly-decomposed body was found in the grounds of the Manchester Royal Infirmary in 2003, wearing similar clothes, police believed it was Mr Delaney and his family held a funeral.
But earlier this year his son, John Renehan, saw a picture of his father on a BBC programme. An appeal was being made for anyone who knew the man - who had amnesia - to come forward.
JOHN RENEHAN:
Well I knew straight away that was me dad. I knew straight away. Obviously his face, it was a bit disfigured, but I just knew straight away that was me dad.
It emerged that John Delaney had been living in a care home for the last eight years. Police have admitted they made mistakes and their enquiries were insufficient. Mr Delaney's son now wants to know the identity of the man he cremated - thinking it was his father.

Google launches web browser

The internet search company Google is launching a web browser designed to cope with new complex web programmes. The browser, called Google Chrome, will challenge Microsoft Internet Explorer which has so far dominated the market. Rory Cellan-Jones reports:
The first thing millions of people do after starting their computer is to open a browser, the piece of software which enables you to surf the web. And in most cases, that browser will be Microsoft's Internet Explorer. Now though Google is launching its alternative, called Chrome.
Ten years after it was born, Google dominates the business of searching the web and is moving its software into new areas, such as mobile phones. It's claiming that its new browser will give web users a faster and more reliable way of visiting websites which now feature all sorts of multi-media content.
In recent years, new browsers, such as Firefox and Safari, have begun to make an impact but Internet Explorer still has about three quarters of the market. Google has shown it can beat Microsoft in a number of areas; changing the ingrained habits of millions of web users will be quite a challenge.

Britons shy away from languages

Two out of three teenagers in Britain are keen to work abroad but most of them don't speak foreign languages. Government figures show that 58% of 11-18 year olds in the UK have no foreign language skills, and this has a negative effect on the economy. Tom Burridge reports:
Fact or fiction? Most British people are lazy when it comes to learning a foreign language.
VOX POPS:
- Fact.
- Why do you say that?
- 'Cos we don't need to. 'Cos everybody else speaks English.
- Fact. Foreigners make it too easy for you because they speak English when you're abroad.
Those views on the streets of London are backed up by figures out this week. The British Government found that 58 percent of 11-18 year olds in the UK do NOT speak a second language. However two thirds of teenagers in Britain want to work abroad when they're older - the countries of choice being Italy, Spain, France or China. The British Government admits there is a problem - that not enough young people continue learning a second language when they leave school. Teresa Tinley from the country's national centre of languages says it has big implications for the economy:
TINLEY:
We are in a competitive global market and we need to be able to speak to our customers and our potential customers. Our trade is very much geared towards English-speaking countries. Our research shows that our exports are suffering.
The research is seen as further evidence that most young people assume they can get by in a foreign country by speaking English - something the authorities in London want to change.

Obama accepts nomination for US presidency

In the US, Barack Obama has accepted the Democratic nomination for the presidency, making him the first black candidate to run for office. He was speaking in a packed stadium in the centre of Denver, from where our correspondent Kevin Connolly reports:
OBAMA:
I accept your nomination for presidency of the United States.
The night on which a major American party acclaimed a black presidential candidate for the first time called for something unique by way of theatre and Barack Obama obliged. In the rock star setting of a cavernous football stadium, on a stage decorated with columns that looked suspiciously like those of the White House itself, he delivered a speech that touched on everything - from motherhood to mortgage debt.
It was strong on patriotism and the readiness to use force as a last resort, but longer on talk of rebuilding areas of American life, which he said, had been fractured in the era of George W Bush:
OBAMA:
In Washington they call this the Ownership Society. But what it really means is that you are on your own. Out of work? Tough luck, you are on your own. Born into poverty? Pull yourself up by your own boot straps. Even if you don't have boots you are on your own.
Topped off with red, white and blue fireworks and confetti fired from stage side cannons, it produced rapturous applause inside the stadium. Its real political test though is how it will play in the uncommitted America that lies beyond.

>> Venice Film Festival starts
Venice Film Festival starts
![]() | |
One of the big annual events in the world of film-making, the Venice Film Festival, gets underway later today. It opens with the latest work written and directed by the Coen Brothers, starring Brad Pitt and George Clooney. Vincent Dowd reports from Venice:
The organisers of the 65th Venice Film Festival will be relieved to have secured a major American movie to kick off with this year. Burn After Reading is a comedy about the CIA from the Oscar-winning brothers, Joel and Ethan Coen.
Venice has sometimes been the launch pad for films which went on to do well in the Academy Awards - but the effects of the Hollywood writers' strike mean the US presence is slightly down this year. But the attendance of Brad Pitt and George Clooney at the Burn After Reading premiere will give Venice some star-power, even though the film isn't actually in competition.
The seven-member jury - headed by the German director Wim Wenders - have until a week on Saturday to choose the best of the 21 films in the main competition. Four of those films are Italian - an unusually high number. But there are new works too from Ethiopia, Algeria and a Japanese-Brazilian co-production. And one of the US movies is directed by Amir Naderi, who started his movie career in his native Iran.
As these big film festivals show, the world of cinema gets more international by the year.
